San Diego LGBT Pride – Rainbow Flag Project

(SAN DIEGO, CA) – San Diego LGBT Pride is pleased to announce the 2012 Rainbow Flag Project. On July 1, prominent members of the community will be joined by local elected officials and business leaders at a flag raising ceremony for a rainbow flag which will fly above the streets of San Diego for the month of Pride. This will be the official kickoff of a whole month’s worth of Pride events and celebrations leading up to the parade and festival. The 38th Annual San Diego Pride Parade and Festival will take place July 20 – 22, 2012. The theme for the 2012 Pride celebration is “America’s Pride.”

San Diego Pride is asking businesses, schools, and individuals throughout San Diego County to also display a rainbow flag from their storefronts, campuses and homes in the month of July to show support for the LGBT community and to proclaim support of equal rights. The rainbow flag has been a symbol of the LGBT community for 34 years and was first popularized as a symbol of LGBT pride by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. The colors of the rainbow have become symbolic of both the unity and diversity of the LGBT community.
