Barilla Earns Gay Boycott, Learns Taking Sides Is Bad For Business – Forbes

Barilla Pasta  stepped  on a landmine this week telling Italian media the company would never feature or market directly to gay couples. If they had a problem with that, said its chairman, they could eat another brand of pasta.

I pity the fool who messes with the purchasing power of the LGBT community.

The remarks as widely reported, were made by Guido Barilla on La Zanzara, an Italian radio program.

I would never make a spot with a homosexualfamily. Not out of a lack of respect but because I do not see it like they do. (My idea of) family is a classic family where the woman has a fundamental role.

He went even further saying, “Ours is a classic family where the woman plays a fundamental role. If [gays] don’t like it, they can go eat another brand,” according to a Reuters translation.

Competitor Bertolli Germany lost little time presenting itself as that very option, as told  by AdWeek. Posting a photo and caption that translates to “pasta and love for all” on its Facebook page and resurrecting a commercialfrom 2011 featuring gay couples.

SANTA FE, N.M.: Court rules against photographer in gay bias case | National Elections | Macon.com

SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico’s highest court has ruled that a commercial photography business violated a state anti-discrimination law by refusing to take pictures of a gay couple’s commitment ceremony.

Elaine Huguenin, co-owner of Elane Photography in Albuquerque, opposes same-sex marriage and had refused to photograph the 2006 event because of her religious beliefs.

The state Supreme Court ruled Thursday the business’s refusal to photograph the ceremony between two women violated New Mexico’s Human Rights Act “in the same way as if it had refused to photograph a wedding between people of different races.”

At Long Last, Dignity? – NYTimes.com

If you live for 80 years, Chuck Bennett told me, you see things you never imagined. Crazy, fantastical stuff.

A man on the moon. “Amazing,” he said.

The Soviet Union’s disintegration. “Also amazing.”

And on Nov. 6, if the polls are right and his hope is fulfilled, the people of Maine may pass a referendum for same-sex marriage, which no state has adopted by popular vote before.

“That’s equally amazing to me,” he said. Ten minutes later, he circled back to say it again. “I would like to reiterate how amazing it is.”

Bennett was born in 1932 and grew up in Brooklyn without anything but slurs and clinical terms to describe his attraction to other men. In the late 1950s, he was forced out of the Navy for being gay.

He never found a long-term romantic partner, thwarted in part by a disapproving society with no obvious role models for him, and he bought his dream house on the ocean here 15 years ago with two close friends, because he didn’t want to grow old alone and didn’t expect to meet anyone special, not so late in the game.

“You know that old saying, Born 50 years too soon?” he asked me. “I think I do feel something of that.”

Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy Assures Mike Huckabee That Nothing Has Changed | Advocate.com

Chick-fil-A COO Dan Cathy spoke with Mike Huckabee on Friday to assure him that nothing has changed about his restaurant chain’s antigay ways.

Huckabee is the organizer of the “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” that supposedly set a sales record for the fast-food company. The Fox News host and failed presidential candidate rallied thousands to defend a series of comments Cathy made, in which he called same-sex marriage “twisted” and seemed to cop to his company foundation’s history of more than $5 million in donations to antigay groups by declaring cavalierly “guilty as charged.”

Then a Chicago alderman named Proco “Joe” Moreno claimed he was finally going to relent and allow Chick-fil-A to expand to his ward because company officials had agreed to end donations to antigay groups and drafted an anti-discrimination statement that was sent to local operators. That statement, titled “Chick-fil-A: Who We Are,” was posted on the company’s website this week and set off backlash from those hordes of “Appreciation Day” believers. Now Cathy wants to clarify that, no, the company doesn’t have any such agreement.

Chick-fil-A Ceases Anti-gay Donations, Clarifies Stance on Gay Customers & Employees

September 18, 2012 – Chicago, Illinois – The Civil Rights Agenda (TCRA), Illinois’ leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights advocacy organization, has learned that Alderman Moreno has finalized his negotiations with Chick-Fil-A. Alderman Moreno has confirmed that Chick-fil-A will no longer give money to anti-gay organizations and that they have clarified in an internal document that the company will treat every person equally, regardless of sexual orientation. The Civil Rights Agenda worked closely with the Alderman in an advisory role as he negotiated these concessions with the executives at Chick-fil-A. Additionally, members of TCRA spoke directly with executives at Chick-fil-A during negotiations to aid in educating their decision makers about anti-discrimination policies and issues affecting the LGBT community.

In a letter addressed to Alderman Moreno and signed by Chick-fil-A’s Senior Director of Real Estate, it states, “The WinShape Foundations is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas.” Winshape, a non-profit funded by Chick-fil-a, has donated millions of dollars to anti-LGBT groups, including some classified as hate groups. In meetings the company executives clarified that they will no longer give to anti-gay organizations.

“We are very pleased with this outcome and thank Alderman Moreno for his work on this issue,” said Anthony Martinez, executive director of The Civil Rights Agenda. “I think the most substantive part of this outcome is that Chick-fil-A has ceased donating to organizations that promote discrimination, specifically against LGBT civil rights. It has taken months of discussion, both with our organization and with the Alderman, for Chick-fil-A to come forward with these concessions and we feel this is a strong step forward for Chick-fil-A and the LGBT community, although it is only a step.”

Additionally, they have sent an internal memo to franchisees and stakeholders that states that as a company, they will “treat every person with honor, dignity and respect-regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender” and that their “intent is not to engage in political or social debates.” This statement was placed into an official company document called “Chick-fil-A: Who We Are.”

“Although we are encouraged by their internal statement, we would still like for the company to adopt an anti-discrimination policy at the corporate level,” said Rick Garcia, policy advisor for The Civil Rights Agenda. “It is one thing for a company to say they respect everyone they serve and employ, it is quite another for them to put that into their policies and demand that all employees adhere to that behavior. As we have heard from gay employees that work for Chick-fil-A, there is a culture of discrimination within the company and we would like to ensure that employees can speak out and call attention to those practices without fear of reprisal. It takes time to change the culture of any institution and steps like a corporate policy ensure that progress is made.”

Chick-fil-A vandalized with marriage equality stickers, rainbow flags – LGBTQ Nation

FREDERICK, Md. — A Chick-fil-A restaurant located on on Urbana Pike in Frederick, Md., was vandalized in the early morning hours on Sunday, according to a spokesman for Frederick County sheriff’s office.

Deputy-Corporal Gregory Santangelo said items glued to the store’s windows included marriage equality stickers and an image with the American and gay pride flags combined. There were also several homemade signs, he said, noting that physical evidence and video surveillance of a suspect were collected at the scene.

At least two other Chick-fil-A restaurants across the country have been vandalized since the company’s president, Dan Cathy, told the Baptist Press he did not support gay marriage, and acknowledged his company had donated millions of dollars to anti-gay organizations.

Among the stickers used to vandalize the restaurant were of the Human Rights Campaign’s logo — a yellow “equal” symbol on a dark blue, square background.

“Under no circumstances does HRC condone vandalism or the destruction of property,” said HRC spokesperson Dan Rafter.

Chick-Fil-A Has ‘Record-Setting Day’ While Embroiled In Anti-Gay Controversy

Mike Huckabee is probably pretty happy right now.

Chick-fil-A, the chicken restaurant under fire for its president’s public comments against same-sex marriage, announced it set new sales records on Wednesday, or as Huckabee renamed it, “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.”

“While we don’t release exact sales numbers, we can confirm reports that it was a record-setting day,” said Chick-fil-A’s executive vice president of marketing, Steve Robinson, in a statement.

Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, had urged people across the country to “affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse” by showing up at the chicken chain on August 1.

Many appear to have taken Huckabee’s call to heart, flocking to the chain’s roughly 1,600 locations in support of its president’s controversial anti-gay position.

Jim Henson Company And Chick-Fil-A: ‘Muppets’ Makers Sever Ties With Anti-Gay Fast Food Chain

Last Friday, the company behind beloved shows such as “Fraggle Rock,” “Labyrinth,” and “The Muppets,” severed ties with Chick-Fil-A due to the fast food chain’s CEO’s opposition to same sex marriage.

According to “Muppets” fan site ToughPigs.com, The Jim Henson Company had partnered with Chick-Fil-A to feature Jim Henson’s Creature Shop toys — “essentially a plastic tube with cut-out features for customizing your own puppet” — in their kid’s meals from mid-July until August 18th.

However, on Friday, the Jim Henson Company posted the following statement to their Facebook page:

The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD. (http://www.glaad.org/)

Chick-fil-A President Denounces Marriage Equality :: EDGE on the Net

The president of the fast food chain Chick-fil-A voiced his disapproval of same-sex marriage in an interview this week and called marriage equality supporters “arrogant” for going against god, On Top Magazine reported.

Dan Cathy came out against gay marriage on a radio show and defended the restaurant’s longstanding anti-gay stance.

“I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, ’We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,’” Cathy said. “And I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.”

After being criticized for his statements the businessman told the Baptist Press earlier this week that he is “guilty as charged” and is very “supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit.”

“We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that,” Cathy told the publication.

Chick-fil-A officials have since released a statement and said the company follows biblically based values.

“The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender,” the statement reads. “Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.”
