Aussie MP Blasts Opponents Of Marriage Equality: ‘Worst Sort Of Hypocrisy’| News | Towleroad

Malcolm Turnbull, the leader of Australia’s Liberal Party and a staunch supporter of marriage equality, delivered a withering rebuke against opponents of LGBT rights in a speech last night.

Describing his conservative counterparts’ arguments as “dripping with the worst sort of hypocrisy,” Turnbull insisted “the threat to marriage is not the gays.”

“It is,” he said, “a lack of loving commitment – whether it is found in the form of neglect, indifference, cruelty or adultery, to name just a few manifestations of the loveless desert in which too many marriages come to grief.”

The MP also invoked his own marriage, “I am utterly unpersuaded by the proposition that my marriage to Lucy, or indeed any marriage, is undermined by two gay men or two lesbians setting up house down the road – whether it is called a marriage or not.”

Australia’s The Age has more from Turnbull’s remarks:

“Do the bishops seriously imagine that legalizing gay marriage will result in thousands of parties to heterosexual marriages suddenly deciding to get divorced so they can marry a person of the same sex?” he said.

“Are not the gays who seek the right to marry, to formalize their commitment to each other, holding up a mirror to heterosexuals who are marrying less frequently and divorcing more often?”

Iowa Marriage Equality Opponents Admit Losing Enthusiasm | Advocate.com

Campaigners that hope to reverse Iowa’s status as a Midwestern outpost for marriage equality appear to be losing their opportunity to win a public vote because of increasing acceptance for same-sex marriage and lack of interest even among conservative Republican voters and lawmakers.

The Associated Press reports on the changes since 2009, when Iowa became the first state in its region to allow same-sex couples to marry after a unanimous state supreme court decision. Conservative activists including the National Organization for Marriage struck back the following year by recalling three of the judges who voted for the decision, but public attitudes have grown more supportive of marriage equality in the years afterward and about 4,500 same-sex couples have married in the state.

“Even Republicans seem to be more accepting, said Julie Summa marketing director for The Family Leader, a social conservative advocacy group,” according to the AP. “She and other evangelical leaders attribute the change to libertarian Republicans, like supporters Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who oppose restrictions on personal freedoms.”

Presbyterian Church narrowly rejects pro-gay proposal to redefine marriage to 2 people – The Washington Post

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) narrowly rejected a proposal to revise the traditional definition of marriage on Friday, a year after it struck down a barrier to ordaining gays.

The Presbyterian General Assembly, meeting in Pittsburgh, voted 338-308 against changing how marriage was defined in the church constitution from a “civil contract between a woman and a man” to a “covenant between two people.” The assembly also rejected measures that would have affirmed a traditional definition of marriage or sought more theological study of the issue.

Other mainline Protestant churches have approved gay ordination or have permitted individual congregations to celebrate same-sex unions in recent years. The U.S. Episcopal Church, which is holding its national convention through next week in Indianapolis, will consider official prayers for blessing same-sex unions. However, only one major Protestant denomination, the United Church of Christ, has endorsed same-sex marriage outright.

Roman Catholic Church of Scotland declares ‘war on gay marriage’ – LGBTQ Nation

EDINBURGH, Scotland — The leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland and the most senior Catholic in the United Kingdom has declared “war on gay marriage,” pledging to spend another £100,000 in its campaign against equal marriage rights for same-sex couples in Scotland.

Speaking in today’s Sunday Times, Cardinal Keith O’Brien warned the Scottish Government that it will face an “unprecedented backlash” from the Catholic Church in Scotland if it goes ahead with plans to legalize same-sex marriage, claiming “marriage is under threat and politicians need to know the Catholic Church will bear any burden and meet any cost in its defense.”

Gay marriage upheld 5 – 0 by New York Supreme Court – Detroit liberal | Examiner.com

The Marriage Equality Act was reaffirmed Friday, July 6th by the New York Supreme Court in by a unanimous 5 – 0 decision. It was a definitive blow to those who oppose equality and who now find themselves on the wrong side of history.

The decision came down from The Appellate Division of The Supreme Court in Rochester after a challenge by New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, an extreme Christian right wing fundamentalist group.

NYCF’s challenge was unusual in the way it attempted to craft its argument. Rather than claiming their individual rights were being encroached on by homosexual people being allowed to marry, which is the typical line of attack, they attempted to prove that a meeting between NY Governor Cuomo, NYC Mayor Bloomberg, and various state senators was a violation of state law. NYCF’s attorneys claimed that because meetings were held in private it violated state laws that require meetings to be held in public.

Tom Mulhall: Beat The Summer Heat: How To Celebrate Nude Recreation Week, July 9-15

I’ve heard many creative suggestions on how to stay cool this summer. You can dig up your back yard and create your own private mud bath. Or, put a fan in front of your freezer and have it blow on you. Speaking of freezers, chill a wet t-shirt, and wear it right before it freezes. Or put ice cubes in your pants pockets. The most interesting one yet is fill your bathtub with orange popsicles and get in. That way, besides cooling off, you’ll look like you got a sunless tan too.

However, there is one sound piece of advice that you should seriously consider. It comes from America’s experts on staying cool on these hot summer days. Nude sunbathers all say:

Take your clothes off and get NAKED!
While people are making plans for taking off on their summer vacations, this smart group of Americans will literally be taking off this summer. They’ll be taking off their clothes while on a fun nude vacation which are also called nakations.

Not a nudist? Always wanted to try skinny dipping, but didn’t know how to find a nice nudist resort? No problem. AANR, The American Association for Nude Recreation and TNS, The Naturist Society, celebrate an annual event every year. Created by The Naturist Society 37 years ago, it’s called Nude Recreation Week. This year it runs July 9-15.
